ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the expressions of peripheral blood microRNA-21(miR-21) and transforming growth factor-beta(TNF-beta)/Smad signaling transduction pathway in patients with bronchial asthma complicated with respiratory virus infection. METHODS: Totally 109 patients with asthma complicated with respiratory virus infection(study group) and 104 patients without virus infection(control group) in the Third People's Hospital of Gansu Province between Feb.2019 and Feb.2021 were selected for the cross-sectional study. The basic data of the two groups were collected, and parameters including vital signs, lung function, peripheral blood miR-21 and TGF-beta/Smad signaling pathway proteins were measured. According to the guidelines, the patients of the two groups were divided into acute exacerbation phase and stable phase. The examination results of each group were compared and the levels of peripheral blood miR-21 and TGF-beta/Smad signaling pathway proteins expression of patients with asthma complicated with respiratory virus infection were analyzed. RESULTS: In study group, the proportion of respiratory virus infection among 109 patients was 33.94% for influenza virus, 23.85% for human rhinovirus, 19.27% for respiratory syncytial virus, 10.09% for parainfluenza virus, 6.42% for adenovirus, 4.59% for human coronavirus and 1.83% for human metapneumovirus respectively. The proportion of patients with acute exacerbation phase in the study group was higher than that in the control group, and the levels of peripheral blood miR-21, TGF-beta1, Smad7, pSmad2 and pSmad3 were higher than those in control group(P<0.05). The levels of miR-21, TGF-beta1, Smad2, Smad3, Smad7, pSmad2 and pSmad3 in peripheral blood of patients with acute exacerbation phase of asthma were higher than those of patients with stable phase of asthma(P<0.05). There were no statistical differences in peripheral blood miR-21, TGF-beta1, Smad2, Smad3, Smad7, pSmad2 and pSmad3 levels in asthma patients with different virus infections. CONCLUSION: Early respiratory virus infections might lead to increased expression of peripheral blood miR-21 and increased activation of TGF-beta/Smad signaling pathway in patients with asthma, which played an important role in acute attack of asthma.

ABSTRACT

The taxonomic diversity and the richness of the region of Seraidi (North-East Algeria) in medicinal plants, as well as the appearance of diseases of viral origin, in particular, the current pandemic of SARS-CoV-2, led us to the realization of an ethnobotanical survey of plants with antiviral interests. The survey was conducted based on a pre-established quiz, with 120 people from different categories of the population of Seraidi, with the aim of listing the medicinal plants used in the treatment of viral diseases and collecting as much information as possible on this subject. After analyzing, the information provided by the people interviewed, we listed 32 species belonging to 20 families, of which the Lamiaceae family is the most represented. Older women are the most affected by the use of plants;people without a higher intellectual level have the most knowledge about the use of plants with antiviral interest. The leaf is the most widely used organ, in the form of a decoction or infusion, administered orally.

ABSTRACT

The study is a review of natural raw materials that can prevent infection and help treat viral infections, including those that cause COVID-19. The condition of not getting infected with pathogens that cause infections of the upper and lower respiratory tract is high the body resistance. An important element that influences the proper immunity of the body is the diet. The functioning of the immune system is improved by bee products, and plant materials: purple coneflower herb, flower and root, licorice root, aloe gel and Baikal skullcap root, as well as black cumin seed oil, chaga mushroom, lemon balm leaves and chamomile flowers. Strengthening immunity is conducive to maintaining a good mood and reducing stress. The antiviral activity has been confirmed for many plant materials, especially those containing essential oils. Natural products can be used for prevention and treatment. The country that copes best with the coronavirus epidemic is China, thanks to a combination of academic and natural medicine. The study quotes an excerpt from the "Handbook of COVID-19 Prevention and Treatment", prepared by Chinese doctors, with particular attention to the recipes used by them.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this experiment was to increase poultry meat production by increasing the number of chickens reared in the same area and managing it by using medicinal herbs Salvia officinalis L and Lavandula angustifolia L. in the broiler chicken diet. 705 one-day-old chicks were randomly distributed into to7 treatments with three replicates for an area of two m2 floor system in each replicate for each treatment, during 35 days of the study. T0 negative control 75 chicks, 25 chicks for each replicate 12-13 chicks per m2 fed standard diet. T1 positive control (stocking density without supplementation)105 chicks, 35 each replicate chicks 17-18 per m2 fed standard diet. The same stocking density for T2, T3, T4, T5, and T6 have been given standard feed with supplemented herbals, salvia 0.7%, 0.9%, lavender0.7%, 0.9%, and mixed 0.7% respectively. Depending on the results, chickens reared in stress stocking density with supplementations led to higher improvement of body weight, meat production, body weight gain (BWG), feed conversion ratio(FCR g feed/g weight), production index PI, carcass weight (g) and dressing percentage, RBCs 106cells/mm3, lymphocyte%, of increasing activity of thyroid hormones T3, T4 (nmol/L) boost antibody titers of ND and IBV when compared with positive control. However, heterophil%, stress indicator H/L ratio, glucose mg/ dL and cholesterol mg/ dL significantly reduced. The results showed that adding sage and lavender plants to broiler feed is effective in improving productivity, immunity, and resistance characteristics in reducing the adverse effects of stress caused by increasing the intensity of broiler rearing in the same area.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to explore the protective mechanism of baicalein against porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) infection. The targets of baicalein were obtained through Pharmamapper, Pubchem, STITCH, TCMSP and Swiss Targer Prediction databases, and the targets of PDCoV infection were obtained according to the proteomics data from our previous study. The targets of baicalein-PDCoV interaction were obtained and analyzed by STRING database and Cytoscape 3.8.2 software to construct a network diagram of "baicalein-PDCoV-targets". The CytoNCA was used to analyze network topology and core network construction. Metascape database was used for GO and KEGG analysis of core network genes. The expression levels of genes in the predicted signaling pathways were detected in vitro. A total of 268 potential targets of baicalein were screened out. There were 75 potential targets of baicalein-PDCoV infection. GO enrichment results showed that baicalein was mainly involved in the formations of membrane raft, spindle and mitochondrial membrane, cell cycle and MAPK signaling pathways. A total of 277 signaling pathways (P < 0.01) were screened out by KEGG enrichment. The PI3K-Akt, Ras and MAPK signaling pathways were the main pathways that involved in the protective effects of baicalein against PDCoV infection. The results showed that compared with the cellular control groups, the mRNA expressions of PI3K, AKT and NF-B significantly increased in the PDCoV infection group. Compared with the PDCoV group, treatment of baicalein significantly decreased the mRNA expressions of PI3K, AKT and NF-B (P < 0.05). The effect of baicalein on PDCoV infection has the characteristics of multi-targets and multi-pathways, through the intervention of AKT1, HSP90AA1, SRC, EGFR, CASP3, MAPK, STAT3 and other core genes in regulating PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, Ras signaling pathway and MAPK signaling pathway, apoptosis, and virus infection. These results suggested that baicalein could be a potential therapeutic drug against PDCoV infection for further study.

ABSTRACT

During the current COVID-19 outbreak, Thai traditional antipyretic recipes and antipyretic herbs have been widely studied. Antipyretic Thai/Lanna herbal decoction for relieving fever in the North consists of Tinospora crispa, Rhinacanthus nasutus, Sauropus androgynus and Alstonia scholaris. This research aimed to study the physical stability, pH, sedimentation, and color of the Lanna antipyretic decoction at 4 degrees C 25 degrees C and 40 degrees C with 75 +or- 5% RH for 7 days. The testing included the Folin Ciocalteu method for quantifying total phenolic content, the aluminium chloride colorimetry for flavonoid content, and the DPPH radical scavenging and ABTS methods for antioxidant activities. The results demonstrated that, for the decoction, the pH values at various temperatures dropped with storage time, the sediment amounts increased with storage time, but its color did not change at 4 degrees C. Its total phenolic and flavonoid contents rose with storage time. The total phenolic contents in mg GAE/g extract at Days 0 and 7 were 161.13 +or- 5.62 and 15.34 +or- 6.21 at 4 degrees C, 160.53 +or- 11.78 and 14.32 +or- 1.13 at 25 degrees C, and 160.09 +or- 7.39 and 12.82 +or- 6.91 at 40 degrees C, respectively;while the flavonoid contents in mgQE/g extract at Days 0 and 7 were 20.32 +or- 0.43 and 7.80 +or- 0.34 at 4 degrees C, 20.10 +or- 0.47 and 7.27 +or- 0.20 at 25 degrees C, and 20.06 +or- 0.55 and 6.63 +or- 0.43 at 40 degrees C, respectively. The decoction's free radical inhibition (IC50) values at 4 degrees C, 25 degrees C and 40 degrees C by DPPH ranged from 14.74 +or- 0.04 to 23.18 +or- 0.72%w/w;and by ABTS the values ranged from 2.63 +or- 0.12 to 3.95 +or- 0.05%w/w. At the storage temperature of 4 degrees C, the decoction showed the best physical stability. Thus, the results can be used in setting up storage guidelines for Thai traditional and folk decoctions to ensue the best stability.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to analyze the AntiCovid effect of Phytocompounds extracted from Native Indian Plant species by computational methods such as Molecular Docking. Through this study keeping the Indian Heritage alive we characterized the ability of these phytochemicals as inhibiting agents of the Main Protease enzyme of this Virus. The lack of any effective treatment and the reoccurrence of cases despite Vaccination necessitates the quick provision of anti-SARS-CoV-2 drugs. Natural substances are getting a lot of attention for SARS-CoV-2 therapy as they have proven antimicrobial activities and are a key source for numerous antiviral drugs. Despite the fact that this virus has several identified target receptors, Main Protease (Mpro) is crucial for viral replication. In this study, 26 phytochemicals from 10 native Indian plant species were studied. Our docking studies demonstrated that compounds Quercetin, Withaferin A, Sominone, and Nimbin were likely to be more favorable than the natural inhibitor N3, with binding energies of-8.42, -9.21, -9.95, and -8.88 kcal/mol, respectively. These four candidate natural compounds were further examined for their bioavailability scores through ADMET analysis to prove the safety of these compounds as well as their drug likeliness. Through the results it was indicated that these natural phytochemicals have a significant potential of inhibiting the SARS-CoV-2 Mpro enzyme and might be utilized to treat SARS-CoV-2 and manage public health, subject to in vitro validation in the future.

ABSTRACT

Background: Antiviral vaccine is not effective, synthetic antiviral drugs are highly toxic, leading to increased interest in herbal medicines as promising antiviral drugs. Recently, Vipdervir has been developed from medicinal herbs with the aim to support and treat diseases caused by viruses such as H5N1 and SARSCoV- 2. In the present study, we assessed Vipdervir's antiviral activity against H5N1 and SARS-CoV-2. In addition, we also evaluated the acute toxicity and repeated dose toxicity of Vipdervir in mice and rabbits, respectively. Methods: H5N1 inhibitory effect of Vipdervir was assessed using hemagglutination inhibition assay. Vipdervir's SARS-CoV-2 inhibitory effect was evaluated by Plaque Reduction Neutralization assay. Acute and repeated dose oral toxicities of Vipdervir were determined according to OECD 423 and OECD 407 guidelines, respectively. Results: Data show that Vipdervir is effective against both H5N1 and SARSCoV- 2. At concentrations of 3 mg/mL and 5 mg/mL Vipdervir completely inhibits H5N1. At a concentration of 50 g/mL Vipdervir showed an inhibitory effect on SARS-CoV-2. Acute toxicity data revealed that the LD50 of Vipdervir is greater than 35200 mg/kg, b.wt. in mice. Repeated toxicity data indicated that Vipdervir did not induce significant differences in body weight gain, hematology and clinical biochemistry in compared to the control group. The No Observed Adverse Effect Level of Vipdervir is greater than 613.8 mg/kg b.wt./day in rabbits. No delayed toxicity effects of Vipdervir were observed. Conclusion: Vipdervir capsules were found to be antiviral effective and relatively safe in the tested doses and experimental conditions.

ABSTRACT

The increased emotional stress and anxiety in the modern human life are common causes of mental health problems which substantially grown during the COVID-19 pandemic. Timely intake of phytosedatives could mitigate the impact of stressful situations and reduce the risk of psychosomatic diseases. Essential oil-bearing plants belonging to the Lamiaceae Martinov family are valuable sources of bioactive compounds possessing sedative effects. The aim of the study was to evaluate the sedative effects of the infusions obtained from five unofficial Lamiaceae Martinov species. Infusions were daily administered to rats intragastrically in a prophylactic mode. The observations of behavioral reactions were carried out on the 1st, 4th and 7th days of the experiment using "open field" test. The sedative effect of infusions after their single administration to animals on the 1st day of the experiment was not observed. Starting with 4 days of the experiment, a noticeable sedative effect was established for the infusions from Dracocephalum moldavica and Ocimum americanum herbs. The noticeable sedative effects of the Dracocephalum moldavica and Ocimum americanum infusions are regarded as a result of synergistic properties of a lot of their biologically active compounds. They were contained artemisia apiacea salvia miltiorrhiza bge. scutellaria baicalensis. pinellia ternate. liquorice. radixImplettri and other traditional Chinese medicine. With ACE2 as the target. 77 components of traditional Chinese medicine were screened out. including salvia miltiorrhiza bge scutellaria baicalensis. pinellia ternatc. Liquorice. radix bupleuri. ephedra and other traditional Chinese medicine. At last. salviolone and dihydrotanshinlactone were found to be the potential inhibitor.

ABSTRACT

Stress such as uncertainty about the future, including the problem of new coronavirus infection, is a very serious problem not only for physical health but also for mental health. It is certain that stress is one of the risk factors for developing mental disorders. We have found stress-responsive biomarker (stress marker) candidates through studies on the process from stress to disease onset. Recently, we have been trying to prove the stress-suppressing effect of aroma with brain factors. We analyzed how aroma affects behavioral changes due to stress and the expression of stress marker candidates in the brain. In this article, the data on aroma that we have accumulated so far will be introduced. Specifically, we will describe changes happened in experimental animals when they smelled coffee beans, lavender, cypress, a-pinene, and thyme linalool. When considering the biological effects of aroma, it is inevitable that not only the olfactory pathway but also odor molecules act through the bloodstream by nasal and transdermal absorption. The brain transferability of odor molecules may be a bottleneck in analyzing the biological effects of volatile components. Thus, we would like to discuss on this issue.

The novel Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is causing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Ancient Chinese herbal formulas are effective for diseases caused by viral infection, and their effects on COVID-19 are currently being examined. To directly evaluate the role of Chinese herbs in inhibiting replication of SARS-CoV-2, we investigated how the phytochemicals from Chinese herbs interact with the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRP). Total 1025 compounds were screened, and then 181compounds were selected for molecular docking analysis. Four phytochemicals licorice glycoside E, diisooctyl phthalate, (-)-medicocarpin, and glycyroside showed good binding affinity with RdRp. The best complex licorice glycoside E/RdRp forms 3 hydrogen bonds, 4 hydrophobic interactions, 1 pair of Pi-cation/stacking, and 4 salt bridges. Furthermore, docking complexes licorice glycoside E/RdRp and diisooctyl phthalate/RdRp were optimized by molecular dynamics simulation to obtain the stable conformation. These studies indicate that they are promising as antivirals against SARS-CoV-2.

Andrographis paniculata (Burm. f.) Nees (fa thalai chon in Thai) is a medicinal plant that naturally grows in Muak Lek district, Saraburi province. During the flowering stage (mature plant), its andrographolide contents in various parts, from high to low, namely leaves, aerial parts, stems and flowers are 5.11%, 4.90%, 0.68% and 1.90% w/w respectively;and in the pre-flowering stage (young plant) the contents are 3.65%, 2.95% and 1.03% w/w respectively. For the treatment of COVID-19 with Andrographis herbal drug, at the andrographolide dose of 180 mg daily for 5 days, 19.6 g of fresh leaves from the young plant or 14.0 g of fresh leaves from the mature plant should be taken. As for the decoction of aerial parts of the mature plant, 2.5 240-mL glasses should be taken per day. But tea from fresh leaves, which is drunk without the pulp, has a too low andrographolide content to achieve the conventional dose for COVID-19 treatment. The results of this study are useful for the public who want to use their own fresh Andrographis herb to treat COVID-19 by themselves. The proper amount has to be calculated based on the andrographolide content in the formula they use.

Background: The novel coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), infected by a new strain of human coronavirus, has engulfed the whole globe with its vicious potential to eradicate humankind. The pandemic has emerged from the Wuhan provinces of China with high transmissibility. Researchers are rushing to discover vaccines and drugs for the disease, which is not known yet. In this study, we have focused on the in-silico screening of phytochemicals occurring naturally in plant extracts that could possibly interact with receptor binding motif (RBM) of spike protein and thereby inhibit virus-cell interaction. Materials and Methods: In this study, we have taken 100 phytochemicals that have been studied in various viral interactions and have shown antiviral properties. Initially, these compounds were analyzed on the basis of their physicochemical and pharmacokinetic properties, biological activities, possible target interactions, similar compounds in humans, and gene regulations using bioinformatic tools, namely Swiss-ADME, PASS (prediction of activity spectra for substances), SwissTargetPrediction, similar ensemble approach (SEA) search server, DIEGP-pred, respectively and were filtered out on the basis of immunobiological activities and expression of genes involved in cytokine storm regulation and immunostimulation. Further, they were docked with the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of spike protein in the SARS-CoV-2 using SwissDock and analyzed by UCSF Chimera.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) continues to devastate the world's health and economy, affecting all aspects of life leading to widespread social disruption. Even as several vaccines have been developed, their availability in developing countries is limited and their efficacy against the variants of SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2) needs to be continuously assessed. The World Health Organization (WHO) has acknowledged that vaccines alone will not overcome the global challenges of COVID-19. Medicinal plants may provide the needed support. Herein, we identify Philippine medicinal plants that possess phytochemicals with potential anti-SARS-CoV-2 activity and/or immunomodulatory properties that may strengthen one's immune system against COVID-19. These plants were selected from 100 of the best-studied Philippine medicinal plants with antiviral and immunomodulatory properties. The general antiviral and specific anti-SARS-CoV-2 activities and immunomodulatory properties of the phytochemicals that these plants contained were searched. While many compounds assessed individually using in vitro and in silico techniques suggest potential anti-SARS-CoV-2 or immunomodulatory effects, this review sought to identify the medicinal plants which contain these compounds and which, based on literature, have the best potential application against COVID-19. These plants are Allium spp. bulbs (bawang), Andrographis paniculata (Burm.f.) Nees leaves (sinta), Cocos nucifera L. oil (niyog), Euphorbia hirta L. leaves (tawa-tawa), Euphorbia neriifolia L. leaves (sorosoro), Moringa oleifera Lam. leaves (malunggay), Ocimum basilicum L. leaves (balanoy), Piper nigrum L. seeds (paminta), Vitex negundo L. leaves (lagundi), and Zingiber officinale Roscoe rhizome (luya). This review provides a shortlist that can guide research on possible solutions to COVID-19 using Philippine medicinal plants.

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of HYSSOP (composed of Hyssopus officinalis L., Echium amoenum Fisch & C. A. Mey and Glycyrrhiza glabra L.) and POLIUM (contained Teucrium polium L., Cuscuta epithymum Murr and Cichorium intybus L.) combined distilled herbal medicines compared to placebo in the prevention of COVID-19. This is a double-blind parallel placebo-controlled field trial conducted on 751 asymptomatic individuals whose one of the family members recently had a positive RT-PCR test for COVID-19. They were divided into three groups including POLIUM, HYSSOP and placebo using random blocks with a 1:1:1 allocation ratio. Participants received daily 5 cc (under 12 years) or 10 cc (over 12 years) of allocated oral medications for 20 days. The primary outcome was the frequency of positive RT-PCR test among participants who became symptomatic. The mean age of participants was 36.6. Nineteen participants get infected by COVID-19 during the intervention;fifteen of them belonged to the placebo and four to the POLIUM group. Fisher's exact test indicated significant differences between HYSSOP and placebo (p<0.001) as well as POLIUM and placebo (p=0.009) groups in terms of COVID-19 confirmed by PCR tests. Cox regression model adjusted for confounders illustrated that the hazard of getting infection by COVID-19 in POLIUM and HYSSOP groups decreased by 66% (OR (95% CI): 0.34 (0.12 to 0.94);p=0.038) and 93% (OR (95% CI): 0.07 (0.01to 0.56);p=0.012) respectively, compared to placebo. This proceedings contains 13 papers focusing on the effect of green tea extract in modulating the antibacterial activity of standard antibiotics against clinical isolates of Acinetobacter baumannii, in silico screening of Ziziphus spina-christi and Strychnos ligustrine compounds as a proteinase inhibitor of SARS-COV-2, antioxidant and antifungal propterties of palu shallot (Allium ascalonicum var. aggregatum), probiotic properties and safety of lactic acid bactera isolated from South Sulawesi ethnic cheese, pharmacognostics of 2 Orthoshipon aristatus varieties and effect of honey consumption after physical exercises on electrolytes and blood sugar levels, among others.

ABSTRACT

The entire world is entrapped by the contagious, lethal infectious Corona disease, brought about by the extreme intense respiratory syndrome corona virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic has been more devastating than the first. The arrival of corona virus vaccines has meant good news for resuming a normal life. However, there are some cases that have been reported that the persons who have been vaccinated still test positive for COVID-19. Unlike the first wave (in 2020), the younger population is getting infection by a corona virus, especially those with comorbidities are at high risk. Evidence from the first wave of data on the mortality rate also suggests that people with weak immune systems, e.g., older people, children, and those with underlying medical issues, are more likely to be affected by Covid-19 disease. Therefore, by improving the human body's immunity, the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infections can be reduced. In this regard, medicinal plants can play an effective role in improving the body's immunity. Thus, in this paper, attempts are made to compile and discuss the use of various plants to boost immunity and also for the prevention of many respiratory diseases having symptoms and signs similar to Corona disease.
